Reflections: First (Full) Day in South America

A quick tour of our departamento (apartment).

My thoughts and goals beginning with the first full day in South America!

I merely wanted to leave a summary of events for these videos…here ya go mis amigos.

07/21/18

Wellll today was day 1 of 364 more days in South America!!  Genevieve and I, my friend who is also apart of the IGP program, finally made it after about 30 hours of traveling.  We will be living and studying at The Universidad Nacional de Tucumán (UNT) in San Miguel de Tucumán for 6 months, a small providence in the North of Argentina, before we head off on our respective internships for the remaining 6 months or so! While in Tucumán we also plan on teaching science classes at a near by school!!

Right Quick-What is IGP?

(IGP or Interdisciplinary Global Programs, is a program unique to Northern Arizona University (NAU) that students apply to.  It allows students who have two majors, a science/business major and a language major, to study abroad for a year during his/her 4th year and then return for a 5th year to finish their undergraduate careers’. For the first part of the year, students study at an international university and for the second part of the year students find an internship/research project to complete while using their second language).

Today-In Short

After being completely drained mentally as well as physically from traveling, only speaking Spanish, and getting ready for our expedition, we were FINALLY able to rest. We arrived around 8:00 pm yesterday and checked into our apartment, showered, checked in with family/friends, and then just slept. Once we woke up around noon (8am US time), we went to the supermarket…which uhhh was quite the experience you can hear about in the video. Then, we came home, made food, and accidently took naps. Then we woke up, walked around the city, almost got ran-over one too many times, ate and drank some delicious coffee (I still need to try Matte!!), stepped inside a church to hear some beautiful Argentine renditions of songs, and then proceeded home to record and kind of digest our emotions. Later at night we spoke with a student from Tucumán. He shared his political beliefs, and explained the economic differences between here and the U.S. It really brought to my attention how where you are born is 1. completely out of your control and 2. can completely determine the lifestyle you live. I think it’s very important for people all over the world to be aware of this and I am excited to continue to capture instances like these to share.

Tucumán is a small, beautiful city with many people. According to our friend we met last night, German (yes like the city, but pronounced Hair-man), Tucumán is not used to housing many tourists from out of the country. Therefore, Genevieve and I may well be the only people from the United States here. It will definitely be interesting to see how that plays out for us!

I hope you enjoyed your watch!!

(I will try to record more videos of the city once I get more acclimated, we were told that it is dangerous to walk around with technology out…so I have to formulate a way to do it…in the mean time here are some pictures)!
